Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Traditional marriage practices in Nigeria are rich in cultural significance and play a vital role in shaping societal values and norms. In Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, traditional marriage ceremonies are deeply rooted in customs passed down through generations. However, the advent of digital media has begun to influence how these practices are viewed, organized, and celebrated. Social media platforms, online marriage counseling services, and virtual wedding planners have introduced new dynamics into the traditional marriage system, affecting everything from the choice of partners to the organization of ceremonies. This study aims to investigate the effects of digital media on traditional marriage practices in Keffi, examining how digital tools and platforms are reshaping cultural practices in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media offers many advantages, such as wider access to information and opportunities for cultural exchange, it also raises concerns about the erosion of traditional practices. In Keffi, the integration of digital media into traditional marriage practices may lead to changes that could dilute cultural authenticity or, conversely, serve to revitalize and modernize these practices. This study will assess both the positive and negative effects of digital media on traditional marriage in the area.
